The Only Region Where Faculty AI Intent Fell This Year Isn't Behind. It's Paying Closer Attention.
The Digital Education Council's AI in Higher Education Global Survey 2026 collected 45,398 responses, 27,284 from students and 18,114 from faculty, across 35 countries. It is one of the largest datasets on AI in higher education assembled anywhere. The headline is the one most people already assume: adoption is climbing fast. Globally, 88% of students and 77% of faculty now report using AI, up 16 points from 2025.
The one region where the line bends the other way
Inside that same dataset sits a single exception. Faculty intent to keep using AI in their teaching fell from 76% in 2025 to 67% in 2026 among US and Canadian faculty, a nine-point decline the Digital Education Council describes as the sharpest regional shift it has ever measured. It is also the only region in the full 35-country sample where faculty intent moved down instead of up.
Why the obvious explanation doesn't hold
The easy read on a number like that is a deficit story: these faculty are falling behind, resistant, overwhelmed. However, that story runs into a second number from the same survey. Fifty-five percent of US and Canadian faculty said they believe AI poses a serious risk to human intellectual development, more than double the 29% who said the same in APAC, the region where intent is rising fastest. A faculty population that still uses AI at rates comparable to the rest of the world, while naming a specific, serious concern about what heavy use costs students, is not a population confused about the technology. It is a population that has used it long enough to notice something the adoption curve alone does not measure.
What this looks like from inside a classroom
This matches what shows up, unmeasured, in conversation after conversation I’ve had with thoughtful educators all year: not rejection of AI and not uncritical enthusiasm for it either, but a genuine middle position, using these tools while refusing to stop asking what they cost a student's developing judgment. This survey is the first time that posture has appeared as a measured trend at scale, isolated to one region, with a real number attached to it.
What the number doesn't fix on its own
Naming a risk is not the same as having a workable way to manage it. Fifty-five percent of faculty saying AI poses a serious risk to intellectual development is not fifty-five percent having a clear framework for deciding, assignment by assignment, what belongs to the student's own thinking and what a tool can reasonably help with. That gap between noticing a real concern and having a structure for acting on it is exactly where calm, principled guidance earns its place, not another push toward faster adoption, and not a retreat from the tools either.
